Montreal beginning second snow-removal operation of the winter

By News Staff

Montreal’s second snow-removal operation of the winter will begin Wednesday evening.

The city says the operation, which involves nearly 3,000 workers and 2,200 vehicles, will kick off around 7 p.m.

The priority for snow removal will be major traffic arteries, lanes reserved for public transportation and bus routes.

The entire operation will cover approximately 10,000 km of streets, sidewalks and bicycle paths.

In a press release, the city says they have put in place several measures to ensure the effective removal of snow: 7,971 free parking spaces, mostly available at night; quick removal of parking bans once snow removal has been completed; and a team designated to identify any equipment in public areas that could cause machinery breakdowns.

The city is asking residents to respect parking bans, remove garbage bags and bins from sidewalks, and park vehicles 30 cm from the sidewalk as well as fold down the mirrors to leave room for snow removal machinery.

During snow removal, it is also recommended by the City of Montreal that people make eye contact with the drivers of snow removal machinery to make sure they are aware of their presence. It is suggested that if there is any doubt, one should stay away from the vehicle and wait for it to leave the scene.
