February 2024 marks the 33rd edition of Black History Month in Montreal.
With the theme “Many Stories, One History,” the month will be celebrated through a wide array of initiatives.
On Thursday, at Place des Arts, the Round Table on Black History Month unveiled the programming.
“Black History month to me,” said Fimo Mitchell, Black History Month 2024’s , English Spokesperson. “It’s a time to reflect.”
“It’s a time to celebrate those that have who have come before us,” he added. “And that have fought, that have protested, that have envisioned and dreamed of us being here today.”

Born and raised in Montreal, Mitchell is the Founder of “When The Village Meditates” -– a non-profit dedicated to fostering meditation, yoga, and wellness retreats tailored to racialized and marginalized communities.
His story, one of the twelve featured in the annual Black History Month calendar.
“There’s people in here that I know personally,” said Mitchell. “That I admire.”
“To be in this calendar with people that I know and don’t know, that are doing great work in the city for the community,” he added. “Is there a bigger honour than that?”
The calendar serves as an opportunity to honour the twelve laureates — one for each month of the year — that have made an important contribution to society.
“They deserve it,” said Michael P. Farkas, president, the Round Table on Black History Month. “And they’re great ambassadors.”
“If we can help to bridge the gap between people because we are one,” said Farkas. “Well lets do it, lets make it happen.”
The month, celebrated through a wide array of mostly free initiatives.
Some events include: The annual Black History Month blood drive, and the screening of documentaries like “Black Ice” and “Afrodiaspora Global” by filmmaker Sheila S Walker who will be in attendance.
“Were gonna take advantage again that window that is February,” said Farkasto. “Bring forth our stories that obviously are spread out throughout the year.”
“It’s a time to come together,” added Mitchell. “To really see each other and hear each other.”
“And hopefully it’s not just in February.”
