Montreal police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run crash that caused major property damage in Ville-Marie borough early Tuesday morning.
Emergency calls began coming in around 2:30 a.m. after an SUV slammed into a traffic light pole near the intersection of Notre-Dame Street East and De Lorimier Ave.

When officers arrived, the vehicle had been abandoned and the driver had fled the scene.
Police later tracked down and arrested the suspect at his home. The 24-year-old suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Investigators believe the SUV had been travelling westbound at a high speed before striking the traffic signal pole.
The suspect could face charges including hit and run and impaired driving.
A security perimeter was set up as investigators examined the scene and reviewed surveillance footage from nearby cameras.

The collision forced several road closures in the area for hours overnight. Westbound Notre-Dame Street was shut down between René-Lévesque Blvd. and De Lorimier Ave., while northbound lanes on De Lorimier Ave. were closed from Notre-Dame Street to René-Lévesque Blvd.

The roads reopened shortly before 9 a.m.
