Freezing rain warning ends for Montreal, then some snow

“Quite strange,” said Shalin Kalavadia, an international student, about the real mix of weather over the last two weeks in Montreal that has included freezing rain, rain and snow as well as slippery sidewalks. Gareth Madoc-Jones reports.

Environment Canada’s freezing rain warning for Montreal and surrounding regions ended just before 10:30 a.m. on Monday, but snow is in the forecast for this afternoon – about two to four centimetres expected. High of plus 1.

The morning brought freezing rain for the area, but it then turned into straight rain.

Chief Meteorologist for CityNews, Natasha Ramsahai explained why the freezing rain stopped.

“It really was a matter of the temperatures trending even 3, 4, 5 tenths of a degree warmer and you’ll totally lose the freezing rain setup, which is what happened this morning.”

On Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, the city experienced freezing rain which left roads and sidewalks slippery and frozen.

City crews are out, but be careful.

The weather was enough for some schools to close, a few private establishments shut their doors: Centre académique Fournier (primary and secondary) and Vanguard primary school.

For those headed to the Trudeau airport, check their website, there are already some delayed or cancelled flights due to weather in the U.S. The airport authority suggests arriving earlier than usual as a precaution.

“Now it’s that rain-snow mix that’s in place for Montreal. Most accumulation will be just north of the city where we could still see, you know, 5, 6, 8 centimeters of snow into Montreal. It may be like a trace to 2 centimeters of slushy accumulation because now it’s warm enough at the surface,” said Ramsahai. “A lot of this stuff is melting on impact. A lot of the accumulation you’re getting on the car or getting on grassy surfaces rather than on roadways.

For Friday night, the weather agency says there is a risk of freezing drizzle, with the wind chill making it feel like minus 7 degrees.

That will continue into Saturday morning, but a high of zero expected.

Then cloudy and temperatures of plus 1 on Sunday.

Back to minus 4 on Monday – with sun and clouds.

Snow could be back on Tuesday.
