By The Canadian Press

The Société Québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) will permanently close one of its branches, laying off 11 workers in the process.

It’s a first for the state-owned company, which had never closed a store before.

The affected branch at Plaza Saint-Hubert in Montreal.

The branch will close its doors to customers on March 2. The end of employment for workers is March 23 – the added time is to complete tasks linked with closing a branch,

Fabrice Giguère, a spokesperson for the SQDC, called it a “business decision,” even if overall “things are going well” at the SQDC.

But the president of the union, David Clément, sees this as a measure of retaliation because of the one-and-a-half-year strike that took place in several unionized branches.
