Montreal on pace to set new high temperature record for Feb. 27

"No snow on the ground allows temperatures to warm up so rapidly," says CityNews chief meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai, as Montreal's unseasonably warm weather broke a record Tuesday for the hottest Feb. 27. Alyssia Rubertucci reports.

It looks like Montreal will set a new record Tuesday evening for highest temperature ever recorded on a Feb. 27.

The forecasted high of 12 degrees Celsius – around 6-7 p.m. – would trump the previous record of 10.9 degrees set in 2000.

Environment Canada’s record-keeping began in 1942.

The national weather authority says the unseasonably mild temperatures, caused by a broad low-pressure system, will affect Quebec Tuesday and Wednesday.

“This will give favourable conditions for the rapid melting of the existing snow cover. Water pooling may be significant in some places,” Environment Canada wrote in a special weather statement.

Montrealers didn’t seem to mind the unseasonably warm temperatures Tuesday.

“I love it. It’s beautiful. We should have more of this. It’s great,” one person told CityNews.

“It’s the first time I don’t wear my jacket,” said another. “So yeah, I’m very happy to have this beautiful weather here in Montreal.”

Though at least one person expressed worry about the situation overall.

“A little bit concerning, because it’s February and it’s warm,” they said. “It’s really warm. So, yeah, I’m just happy, but a little bit concerned.”

Between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, a cold front will move through much of Quebec.

“As it passes, rain will change to snow, and strong westerly winds will develop,” the special weather statement reads. “Finally, temperatures will drop sharply, resulting in the quick freezing of water on the ground. Roads could quickly become slippery, making travel difficult.”

Freezing rain and flash freeze warnings are currently in place for Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Matagami.
