By News Staff

It was an emotional final day for the coroner’s inquiry in the death of slain Quebec provincial police sergeant Maureen Breau who was killed in the line of duty on March 27, 2023.

Isaac Brouillard Lessard, a 35-year-old man suffering with mental illness stabbed the officer during an attempted arrest before he was shot dead by her two colleagues.

After 18 days of hearings and a total of 67 testimonials, the public inquiry, taking place in Trois-Rivières and presided over by coroner Géhane Kamel, concluded Thursday.

Addressing Sgt. Breau’s family, Brouillard Lessard’s father told them he was very sorry and that he wished he had been able to do more.

Brouillard Lessard’s parents had tried to get their son forcibly hospitalized in the days leading up to the attack because his mental health had deteriorated.

Coroner Kamel addressed both families in her closing remarks, telling Brouillard Lessard’s parents that they tried to do what they could for their son and that she hoped he was now at peace, safe from his demons.

Addressing Sgt. Breau’s family, she said she hoped they would remember her humanity and how she served until her last breath.
