Montreal police (SPVM) are investigating a man’s death in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough as a homicide.
It would be the 10th homicide in Montreal this year. The investigation was transferred to the SPVM’s major crimes division.
“The SPVM has been investigating this death since 5 a.m.,” said SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.
“Investigators will try to understand the causes and circumstances surrounding the death.”
The victim, a man in his 30s, was found by a passerby in an alley on Parc Avenue, near Mont-Royal Avenue, around 5 a.m. Sunday. Emergency services arrived on the scene after a 911 call.
“When police arrived, they located a man in his 30s who was unconscious. CPR maneuvers were carried out, but unfortunately the man’s death was noted on site,” said SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.
“Marks of violence were observed, which suggests a suspicious death on the part of the SPVM.”
A large security perimeter – formed by Villeneuve Street, Hutchison Street, Mont-Royal Avenue and Jeanne-Mance Street – was erected to protect the scene and facilitate the work of investigators. Businesses within the perimeter were temporarily inaccessible.
Police are looking for “witnesses and surveillance cameras to have more information on the event itself. The investigation is beginning at the SPVM in connection with this suspicious death,” Brabant said.
The SPVM mobile command post and forensic identification technicians were on site.
