Tornado warning issued for parts of southwestern Quebec

A tornado warning has been issued for parts of southwestern Quebec, and eastern Ontario Monday afternoon.

Environment Canada issued the warning for the areas of Saint-Donat – Mont-Tremblant Park in the Laurentians, while other tornado warnings have been downgraded to severe thunderstorm warnings, like in Sainte-Agathe, Lachute, and Papineauville – Chénéville.

A thunderstorm watch is currently in effect for areas in parts of southern Quebec, like Montrea, and as far northeast as Saint-Ignace-du-Lac, as far southeast as the border near Saint-Armand, down into Ontario past Kingston, and as far northwest as Mos Sakik, Quebec — northwest of Ottawa.

Environment Canada says the thunderstorm watch has favourable conditions to create strong winds and large hail into the afternoon and evening. It could also lead to a tornado.

Residents are being urged to take shelter immediately if it looks like a tornado is approaching.

“Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell, or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris,” reads an Environment Canada warning.

Montreal is expected to get around 10 millimeters of rain on Monday with the storm.

Winds are expected to range around 30 km/h with gusts getting up to 50 km/h.

A thunderstorm is also expected on Tuesday afternoon for Montreal and the surrounding area.
