YATAI MTL street market: Exploring Japan without leaving Montreal

“Come with an empty stomach,” says Charles Nguyen from YATAI MTL, a Japanese street market in Montreal that celebrates the country's culture through food, merchants, music, and more until June 16. Pamela Pagano reports.

Deliciousness and more can be found at the 5th edition of YATAI MTL.

On the green grounds of the Lachine Canal National Historic Site, festival-goers are set to experience a total immersion in Japanese culture — without leaving the city.

“Last year, just to give you an idea 30,000 people came to this four-day event,” said Charles Nguyen, Media and Community Management of ASIASIE — the non-profit organization spearheading the street market. “This year, you definitely have to return.”

“Definitely, the food, the food, the food.”

The over 30-plus culinary kiosks on Montreal’s Hangar 1825 site is are just the beginning.

There’s are also more than 30 merchants selling Japanese products.

“Come in and try some kimonos,” said Charles. “Learn more about the matcha the hojicha, different types of teas.”

“Come on over to my kitchen,” said the founder of Hungry Diana Dumplings, Diana Nguyen. “I’m so honoured to be part of YATAI.”

“To be able to share more of my dumplings and flavours that I know and love with everyone,” she added. “I’m not gonna lie, I love watching people eat my dumplings.”

“It brings me so much joy.”

“The backbone of Hungry Diana dumplings is my mom,” explained Diana. “She is the reason why I know how to cook, she is the reason I know so much about food.”

“Not only that,” she added. “She is still here in the kitchen with me cooking the dumplings that you know and love.”

Also on the event’s menu: a rich cultural programming.

Including a piano concert, an 80’s Japanese disco Citypop party on Saturday, and something paw-some.

“You love dogs, there’s a Shiba gathering and Akita,” said Thien Vu Dang, co-founder of ASIASIE. “We’re gonna do a Shibalade – in French, it’s a walk.”

“There’s gonna be a contest here on stage,” he added. “For the most stylish Shiba and Akita.”

“Peoples just heart melt for that.”
