Heat warning, severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Montreal

By News Staff

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the island of Montreal and surrounding areas.

Tuesday and Wednesday could see humidex values between 35 and 37, making it feel closer to 43 degrees Celsius.

A severe thunderstorm watch was also in effect for Tuesday. The weather agency says in the afternoon and evening, conditions will be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

They encourage people to take precautions, as large hail can damage property and cause injury, while strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, break off tree branches and more.

Precautions to avoid heat stroke

Environment Canada advises everyone to drink plenty of water regularly, even before they feel thirsty to decrease their risk of dehydration.

They warn that extreme heat can affect everyone’s health, but the health risks are far greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues.

Those who find themselves overheated should immediately seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, splash pad, misting station, or air-conditioned spot like a public building.

As the week progresses, Montrealers can expect cooler temperatures.

Wednesday will bring a mix of sun and cloud in the morning with 30 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon — high of 28, and feeling like 35 with the humidity. At night, it will be cloudy with 60 per cent chance of showers and a low of 18.

The warm and humid air mass currently affecting southern Quebec is expected to exit the area by Wednesday night.

Sunny skies are on tap for the rest of the week — Thursday, Friday and Saturday — with highs between 24 and 27 degrees.
