Haitian singer wins Nuits d’Afrique 2024 francophone artist prize

Haitian singer Rutshelle Guillaume received the Nuits d’Afrique Prize for Francophonie on Monday in Montreal.

According to a press release, the prize is awarded to “an artist with an international influence, who embodies a unifying vision of the Francophonie and the diversity of cultural expressions in the international Francophone space.”

She performed her closing concert at the festival on Sunday, where several hundred people gathered for the show.

At Montreal City Hall Monday, Guillaume officially received the accolade.

“I am deeply honoured to receive the Prix de l’artiste de la francophonie 2024. Thank you to the City of Montreal and to the committee of the Festival international nuit d’Afrique,” said Guillaume in French.

The Haitian singer has been dubbed the queen of kompa — a modern dance music genre of Haiti

The 38th edition of the International Nuits d’Afrique Festival featured African, Caribbean, and Latin music.

Paid shows were played at various Montreal venues like Club Balattou, Le Fairmount and Le Ministère.

From July 16 to 21, free outdoor shows took place in the Quartier des Spectacles.

Over 700 artists from over 30 countries performed at the International Nuits d’Afrique Festival. Previous prize winners include Manu Dibango, Salif Keita and Angélique Kidjo.
