16-year suspected of murdering West Island man escapes from custody in Ontario

Montreal police say a teenager who was arrested in connection with the killing of a 42-year-old man in the West Island last February has escaped from custody in Ontario.

The 16-year-old escaped from custody on Sunday while being held in a youth correctional facility in Petersburg, Ontario.

The youth was arrested on July 18 in Ontario in connection with a murder last February in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.

The teen was already in custody in Kitchener for armed robbery.

42-year-old man shot and killed in the West Island

On Feb. 6, a 42-year-old man was shot and killed in the parking lot of a shopping mall at the corner of des Sources and Brunswick boulevards in DDO.

The victim, Stevens Cantave, was allegedly involved in street gangs and had a criminal past, including being accused of kidnapping, drug trafficking and more.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police say evidence made it possible to identify the 16-year-old suspect.

The investigation is ongoing and SPVM are now asking anyone with information on the case to contact police.
