Quebec judge grants temporary injunction to stop protests from blocking Montreal airport

A Quebec judge has granted a temporary injunction to stop protests from blocking access to Montreal Trudeau Airport.

It comes after the environmental group Last Generation Canada disrupted airport operations last week.

On two occasions, protesters blocked access to the departures and arrivals area of the airport, as environmental activists glued their hands to the ground.

They also threw washable paint at the building.

The group has been demanding an end to all new fossil fuel projects.

In a statement to CityNews, Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) officials say the right to demonstrate is still allowed on the airport site, but in compliance with applicable procedures to ensure that airport operations are not obstructed.

“ADM firmly believes that it is completely unacceptable to compromise access to an airport that offers essential services, at the expense of passengers and deplores the fact that the airport site was targeted by the group’s actions, at a time when the group is trying to attract the attention of the federal government, seeing as this is a much broader societal debate,” read the statement.

Last Generation Canada said in a statement of their own that they’ve sent a letter to airport officials to invite them to have a conversation about the recent disruptions.

In the letter, Last Generation Canada tells the airport: “In normal times, such disruptions would be wholly unacceptable. However, we are facing extraordinary circumstances. Canada has been engulfed by devastating wildfires, with entire regions evacuated and burned down. Scientists across the world have been calling for an end to fossil fuels, and are collectively panicking due to government inaction on a crisis they warn will ‘kill 1 billion people by the end of the century.’”

The airport applied for an emergency injunction and they say they hope to obtain a permanent injunction.

The court order is in effect until Aug. 9.
