The Welcome Hall Mission is offering 100 coupons for extra meals to help the homeless population that uses the Maison Benoît Labre day centre in the borough of Saint-Henri.
The shelter is located next to a park and the Victor-Rousselot elementary school, which has caused concern for residents in the area. They claim acts of indecency and violence have increased since the centre opened.
The CAQ government asked the Welcome Hall Mission to provide these meals to help relocate the homeless population since the organization is located two kilometres away from the area.
The Welcome Hall Mission already provides around 1,300 meals a day. The extra 100 meals will be used as a pilot project to determine how it goes in the next month.
Maison Benoît Labre is the city’s first supervised drug inhalation and injection site. It has 36 housing units for people experiencing homelessness.
The City of Montreal announced they want to relocate the shelter’s day services earlier this week.
Sud-Ouest Mayor Benoit Dorais said on Tuesday that the move would not affect the site’s drug consumption rules but rather the centre’s services for the homeless population throughout the day.
“We’re not asking for the drug consumption site to be moved. What people are noticing in public spaces are the difficulties associated with having a large concentration of people seeking services from the day centre. That’s what we need to relocate,” said Dorais.
