Woman dies in Montreal apartment fire

By News Staff

A woman in her 70s is dead after a fire broke out in an apartment in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough of Montreal on Friday morning. Authorities say the smoke detector was not working.

The blaze started at around 10:50 a.m. in a three-storey building on Aird Ave, near Hochelaga, but was contained to just one unit.

The fire department requested the assistance of Montreal police (SPVM).

The victim was found in cardiac arrest in the apartment, and was taken to hospital by emergency services – where her death was confirmed.

“On the scene police were informed by firefighters that a woman age of around 70 years old was located in one of the units in cardio pulmonary arrest,” said Véronique Dubuc, spokesperson, SPVM.

A perimeter was setup as investigators from the SPVM’s arson unit and forensic technicians are on the scene.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Property damage is believed to be contained to the one unit only.
