An 11-year-old boy died after being hit by a delivery truck in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal on Monday evening.

Several 911 calls were made to police about the incident that occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Bernard Street and Parc Avenue.

According to preliminary information, the delivery truck was heading south on Parc and reportedly hit the child at the crosswalk when the driver tried to make a right turn onto Bernard.

Montreal Police said that the child was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The 28-year-old male driver of the truck was not injured and remained on the scene for questioning.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Mayor Valérie Plante extended her sympathy to the child’s family on social media and urged Montrealers to drive carefully.

“Protecting the most vulnerable on our roads is everyone’s business,” she wrote.
