BEI investigates police shooting in Longueuil

A man was shot and wounded late Thursday afternoon during a police operation at a gas station near Charles-Lemoyne Hospital, in Longueuil’s Greenfield Park borough.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), which was tasked with investigating the case, explained in a press release issued Friday morning that the Groupe d’intervention tactique (GTI) of the Service de police de Longueuil (SPAL) intervened with a vehicle in order to arrest a suspect in connection with an alleged criminal offence.

During the intervention, a police officer allegedly fired at an individual in circumstances not disclosed by the BEI, injuring one person.

First aid was administered by paramedics called to the scene, and the victim was transported to hospital, where his condition is stable. The severity of his injuries is unknown.

The BEI was called to the scene at around 5:30 p.m., and a large security perimeter was set up around the gas station throughout the evening and into the night. Five BEI investigators were assigned to the case.

The BEI’s role is to investigate all cases where a civilian dies, suffers serious injury or is injured by a firearm used by a police officer during a police intervention or while in the custody of a police force.

The Sûreté du Québec, acting as an outside police force, has been called in to conduct a parallel criminal investigation in this case.
