Temporary modular housing being built at former Hippodrome

By News Staff

A former horse racing track in Montreal that’s been sitting undeveloped for several years will be used for a modular housing project to provide temporary accommodation for the homeless.

The former Blue Bonnets Raceway – later named the Hippodrome – along Décarie Boulevard is one of two sites chosen to accommodate modular housing for 30 people currently waiting for a permanent home.

The other site – a vacant lot on Louvain Street West in Ahuntsic’s Garment District – will also house 30 people.

The modular units will include bedrooms, adapted rooms for people with reduced mobility, as well as common areas and bathrooms. They are expected to be ready by spring 2025.

The city has said the temporary housing – a collaboration between the Quebec government, the health and social services network, and community organizations – will alleviate pressure on the housing network while more permanent units are being built.

The city says 17,000 people are waiting for social housing in Montreal.
