28 people died using bad winter tires in Quebec, since 2021: report

By News Staff

Over the past three years, 28 people have died on Quebec roads because their vehicles had non-compliant or overly worn winter tires, according to a report by Le Devoir.

Police forces have been conducting operations since the beginning of December to target at-risk drivers.

According to several coroners’ reports, the primary causes that led to the 28 deaths were due to poor vehicle maintenance combined with bad weather conditions.

In fact, a 38-year-old crashed their vehicle on snowy roads while driving on 11-year-old winter tires.

Experts say the maximum life for winter tires should not exceed six years.

In Quebec, a vehicle must be equipped with winter tires from Dec. 1 to March 15 and drivers could face a fine ranging from $200 to $300 if they don’t comply with the regulations.

Last week, 292 Montreal drivers were fined for driving their vehicles with non-compliant or worn tires.

A similar operation was conducted in Gatineau where police issued 37 tickets.

More of these road checks are expected to take place in Laval and Longueuil.
