The City of Montreal is launching its first snow-clearing operation of the winter Tuesday evening.

Trucks will hit the streets around 7 p.m. in all boroughs.

The city says snow loading will be done “as quickly as possible” because temperatures are rising, and that will lead to an accumulation of water. There is also rain in the forecast.

“We’re expecting malicious forecast, there’s a lot of rain tomorrow,” said Philippe Sabourin, City of Montreal spokesperson. “They’re calling for 30-40 mm of rain, it’s going to freeze by Thursday.”

Some 3,000 people and 2,500 snow removal vehicles will take part in the loading operations on the approximately 10,000 kilometres of the city’s network.

“We will grab as maximum of snow as we can before the temperatures drop, then we will analyze the situation on Thursday morning,” said Sabourin. “One thing is sure though, if there is a slippery conditions on sidewalks, the city won’t hesitate to hold the grabbing operation to focus on those sidewalks.”

Until the start of the snow loading, the city says teams are busy finishing the clearing and spreading of salt on the sidewalks.

The city asks that Montrealers respect the no parking signs during the operation and encourage them to consult their Info neige app that allows people to see how it is advancing.
