It was a slippery and wet start to the day for Montrealers, making the commute a difficult one for many – and more tough weather conditions are on the way.
Environment Canada issuing two alerts for the region early Tuesday morning, after the city was already under a special statement the day before. And they say, “consider changing any non-essential travel plans for this period.”
A freezing rain warning – calling for rain and freezing drizzle early this morning. The weather agency saying highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.
“Slow down driving in slippery conditions. Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance.”
The rainfall warning is in effect for overnight, through to Wednesday night – and 30 to 40 millimetres are expected from the Montérégie area to Quebec City.
“An intense low pressure system will bring some rain over Southern and Central Quebec. As the ground is frozen and has a reduced absorption capacity, significant quantities of water could accumulate on roads and other areas. A significant rise in the flow and level of some rivers is also possible,” writes Environment Canada.
Following the rain, a drop in temperatures is expected overnight Wednesday that could lead to a flash freeze of pooling water. Roads may become slippery, causing poor travel conditions and travel delays Thursday morning.
“In addition, as the temperatures plummet, very strong winds are likely to cause damage to trees and equipment, and flurries could leave a few centimetres in some areas, in addition to reducing visibility.”
Temperatures will hit plus 5 degrees on Tuesday, and remain steady for Wednesday. Then -1 on Thursday with flurries. The sunshine expected to return on Friday and Saturday, but dipping to -4 degrees both days. More snow possible Saturday night and a low of -8, with flurries continuing on Sunday and a high of zero.
