The murder trial of a man accused of killing a 24-year-old woman in Montreal more than three years ago is going ahead after some delays.
Romane Bonnier, an aspiring singer and performing artist, was stabbed several times on the afternoon of Oct. 19, 2021, near McGill University.
“She was just beautiful, beautiful, very artistic, pleasant person. Always smiling,” said Rita Jerumanis, Bonnier’s former teacher, in 2021.
Thousands marched in honour of Bonnier in Montreal following her death.
The suspect and victim were ex-roommates, and police say the homicide was a case of domestic violence – the 17th femicide in Quebec that year. The suspect, who was 36 at the time, was arrested at the scene.
François Pelletier was charged with first-degree murder the following day.
The start of the trial has reportedly been delayed because Pelletier has been unable to find a defence lawyer. He’s also reportedly fired three previous lawyers.
The case is scheduled back in court Friday.
