Montreal braces for double weather threat: severe storms and wildfire smoke

Residents across Montreal are being urged to prepare for a challenging Saturday as Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued both a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and a Special Air Quality Statement, warning of potentially damaging weather and hazardous smoke from ongoing wildfires.

Forecasters say atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms early this evening. Some storms could produce wind gusts of up to 90 km/h and localized rainfall of up to 50 millimetres, raising the risk of flash flooding, downed tree branches, and isolated power outages.

The storm threat is expected to be strongest during the early evening before conditions gradually improve overnight. Boaters are also being warned that sudden, powerful wind gusts could make conditions hazardous on lakes and rivers.

Environment Canada advises residents to secure loose outdoor items and avoid flooded roadways. “When thunder roars, go indoors” remains the key safety message, as lightning continues to be one of Canada’s deadliest weather hazards.

Cooler, cleaner weather on the way

The unsettled weather is expected to move out overnight as winds shift to the northwest, helping to clear both the storms and much of the lingering smoke.

Sunday will bring clearing skies with a high of 24 Celsius (humidex 25), though breezy northwest winds gusting to 40 km/hwill persist. Sunny and pleasant conditions are forecast for Monday with a high near 26 C.

Rain chances return by Tuesday, with a 60 per cent chance of showers, followed by a wetter pattern on Wednesday before sunshine and warmer temperatures return later in the week. Friday’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 28 C.
