City of Montreal encourages disposing Christmas trees in eco-friendly way

The City of Montreal is encouraging citizens to dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way.

After the holiday season, a date will be set where Montrealers could place the tree on their curbside for the city’s special Christmas tree collection.

Trees that are picked up will be converted into wood chips.

“Most of the recovered Christmas tree wood will be crushed to be recycled or used for energy recovery,” the city said in a statement on Friday. “Last year, 290 tons of Christmas trees were recovered, the equivalent of the weight of fourteen STM buses.”

The Christmas tree collection is separate from and complementary to other collections, the city explained.

The dates for collection vary by borough but will generally take place over the first and second week of January.

The city urges Montrealers to keep an eye out for the date of the collection by visiting montreal.ca or by calling 311.

In case of snow loading during the collection day, they ask that the tree be temporarily removed from the public domain to facilitate snow removal operations.
