The City of Montreal is moving forward with the redevelopment of Notre-Dame Street East, in Vieux Pointe-aux-Trembles, which is scheduled to begin next spring.
“While the project aims to replace or extend the life of century-old underground infrastructure,” the City said in a press release. “The City is seizing this opportunity to redevelop Notre-Dame Street East, between 1st and 13th Avenues.”
“To make it a modern, complete and dynamic living environment.”
“Our underground infrastructure is aging and it is essential to rehabilitate or replace it to continue to provide quality services to the population,” said Émilie Thuillier, Chair of the Executive Committee and responsible for human resources, infrastructure, buildings and asset maintenance.
” Rather than rebuilding identically, we are taking the opportunity to transform Notre-Dame Street East,” she added.
The redevelopment is set to include widening of the sidewalks, which the city said will improve pedestrian comfort and safety, “while contributing to
commercial vitality by providing the space needed to build terraces.”
The project also includes, among other things:
- Burying the electrical and telecommunications network underground;
- Replacing street lighting and traffic lights;
- Installing new street furniture;
- Reconstructing the street;
- Reconstruction of sidewalks that will be widened;
- Reconstruction and rehabilitation of sewer and water pipes;
- Replacement of lead service entrances.
The street will also be “significantly greener” the City said.
Nearly 300 trees and shrubs will be planted — and more than 2,300 perennials.
“These new plantings will not only help make the artery more beautiful and user-friendly,” said the City. “But also reduce heat islands.”
Sponge developments will also be integrated into the project in the form of drainage projections.
A way to make the city more resilient to the impacts of climate change, particularly during heavy rain events, they said.
“The long-awaited Notre-Dame Street East redevelopment project in Old Pointe-aux-Trembles will transform our neighbourhood,” said Caroline Bourgeois, Mayor of the Rivière-des-Prairies – Pointe-aux-Trembles borough. “Making it more welcoming and dynamic.”
The work is scheduled to be carried out in different phases — to help reduce the impact on the population and commercial activities.
It is set to begin next spring and the City said should be completed in the fall of 2026.
