More than 30 Quebec salmonella cases linked to mini pastries

By The Canadian Press

The Public Health Agency of Canada says there are 61 cases of salmonella in Canada, including 17 requiring hospitalization, that have been linked to recalled Sweet Cream brand mini pastries.

Thirty-three of the 61 cases of illness were reported in Quebec, 21 in Ontario, four in British Columbia, two in Alberta and one in New Brunswick.

The pastries have been distributed to bakeries, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, senior living facilities and caterer events, the agency said.

“People became ill from late September 2024 to mid-December 2024,” the public health agency wrote in a statement Sunday.

“Many ill people have reported eating mini pastries at catered events or other establishments where the recalled product was served,” it said.

Those who fell ill ranged in age from three to 88, the agency said, adding that 61 per cent of them were women.

A notice issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency states that the recall involves four-kilogram boxes of Sweet Cream mini pastries and one-kilogram trays with best-before dates between June 17, 2025, and November 15, 2025, inclusive.

The advisory says that healthy people infected with salmonellosis may experience short-term symptoms, such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, and that the infection may be more serious for young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

Public health officials said the investigation is ongoing and that additional cases may be reported as part of the outbreak, as there is a period of time between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported.

The warning follows another egg recall linked to salmonella, also issued this weekend. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled certain brands of eggs in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and elsewhere due to possible salmonella contamination.

In this case, the recall was triggered by test results and no illnesses have been reported, the agency said Saturday.

The egg recall involves Compliments, Foremost, Golden Valley Eggs, IGA, No Name and Western Family Eggs with best before dates of Feb. 16, Feb. 22 and March 1.
