A 42-year-old woman who was found dead Thursday in a home in Montreal’s LaSalle borough was the victim of murder, police say.
It is the first homicide of the year in Montreal and the first woman killed in Quebec in 2025.
On Friday, her 21-year-old son, Tyrell Rytar, appeared at the Montreal courthouse to face a second-degree murder charge.
He is accused of killing his mother, Lisa Marie Rytar — and a court document shows that it would have happened on or about Jan. 21 (Tuesday). Police say the suspect does not have a criminal record.
“At first, we were talking about a suspicious death because all the circumstances surrounding her death were unknown,” said Mariane Allaire Morin, spokesperson for the Montreal police (SPVM). “But with the investigation and further information that we got during the night, we were able to say that it’s a murder.”

SPVM officers were called around 11:35 a.m. on Thursday to go to a home on Turley Street, near Dora Street, for a wellness check, explained Morin.
Police then discovered the lifeless body of the woman. The scene was protected since the death was considered suspicious.

The SPVM spokesperson confirmed Thursday evening that it was a homicide, since traces of violence had been found on the victim’s body.
The suspect was arrested and taken to an investigation centre to be questioned by the police.
“When you hear a young women gets murdered by a kid, and especially in the family, it’s really bad,” said Piyush Jain, who lives on the same street as victim.
“I don’t think anybody knows them personally, but everybody knows almost everyone over here,” said Jain. “We’ve been talking since the morning and yesterday night. And everybody is kind of scared of what exactly happened in our neighbourhood.”

“This is the first time that we’ve had such a horrendous thing happen,” said Juliana, the victim’s neighbour. “She was a nice lady. She kept to herself. We never saw anything wrong.”
“Families are supposed to love each other, to respect each other, to be together. So I don’t know the reasons behind all this drama. I just hope that everyone affected finds solace and peace after this. We have kids, they were asking questions, and they learned that it was somebody who was found murdered,” added Juliana.
“It is really sad and quite disheartening,” said Jain. “When we have a small kid with us, it’s kind of scary. So we’ve been trying to tell our kid since yesterday, don’t get scared.”
The suspect is due back in court Feb. 25.
