The aspiring leader of the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) Pablo Rodriguez is looking to woo the party’s young activists by possibly increasing the youth wing’s budget.
The goal – to give the PLQ’s youth commission (CJ) “a permanent presence in the party, either by hiring a full-time resource or part-time resources, according to the needs that will be determined by the executive.”
If elected leader, Rodriguez also says he’ll commit to meeting with the CJ executive to hear the “needs” and “priorities” of Quebec’s youth.
“When I was vice-president of the CJ, we left our mark on Quebec by inspiring the Allaire report. We were never afraid to shake up the party. The CJ serves a bit of that purpose and has always pushed the PLQ to reinvent itself. It’s time to give it back the tools and resources so that it can seek out new members and new ideas,” said Rodriguez in a press release.
Young people – ages 16 to 25 – are very important in the race, accounting for 33 per cent of the vote in choosing the next leader.
The rules of the leadership race require aspiring candidates to recruit 350 new members.
The Liberals will choose their new leader on June 14, 2025.
The PLQ youth commission was created in 1970 under Robert Bourassa.
