The Legault government is not ruling out removing American wines from the SAQ shelves if the United States imposes 25 per cent tariffs on products from Canada as of Feb. 1.
Quebec Finance Minister Eric Girard, who is responsible for the SAQ, suggested Wednesday that this is one of the scenarios being considered.
This would be retaliation against the tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a press scrum Wednesday morning at the National Assembly, Girard reiterated that he is first working to avoid the imposition of tariffs, but that if the U.S. carries out its threat, Quebec is already ready to retaliate.
“This is one of the elements that is being studied,” he said.
In 2023-2024, 6.8 per cent of the volume of wines sold at the SAQ came from the United States — in fourth place, far behind France (33.2 per cent), Italy (23.3 per cent) and Spain (10.8 per cent).
