The Official Opposition at Montreal’s City Hall, Ensemble Montréal, announced it is resuming its leadership race Tuesday.
Candidates have until Feb. 28 to enter the race.
The party had initially given candidates until Dec. 15 to come forward, with plans to launch their race on Jan. 9, but had to postpone that to give candidates more time.
“The strategic pause chosen by Ensemble Montréal has been beneficial,” said Aref Salem, interim leader of Ensemble Montréal, in a press release. “The past weeks have been marked by productive exchanges, and the Montreal political scene will be extremely dynamic in the coming months.”
To be eligible, potential candidates must collect signatures from 200 members, including at least 100 new members from at least 10 boroughs. They must also raise $15,000 in donations. Other rules are laid out on their website.
The party says while candidates are invited to announce their plans publicly, they have to receive official endorsement from the Board of Directors for their candidacy to be considered valid.
An official debate between candidates is expected to be held in March.
“Together, we aim to advance our vision for a more unified city, with a management approach centered on the priorities of our citizens,” said Carmine Pollice, Ensemble Montréal’s president. “We are excited to see the innovative proposals from candidates and how they will inspire Montrealers during this pivotal moment.”
On April 6, during an investiture congress, Ensemble Montréal members will vote to elect the new party leader, who will then become the mayoral candidate for the municipal elections on Nov. 2.
