Summer pothole repairs in Montreal won’t begin until August

Montrealers are in for a bumpy ride on the city streets for a few more weeks. The City of Montreal says the summer pothole repairs won’t begin until Aug. 3.
In May, Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada announced a strategy for fixing the roads including funding for the boroughs and manual patching. The City launched a bid for the repair work on May 13, however, the contracts for the repair work were not awarded until this month.
“The standard timeframes applied for opening the bids, assessing their compliance, and awarding the contracts,” wrote Hugo Bourgoin, spokesperson for the City.
Bourgoin added that city officials met with the two selected bidders mid-July and that work would begin after the construction holiday.
“It should be noted that regardless of when work on these contracts begins, our teams remain on standby at all times and continue to carry out repair work.”
Officials say apart from awarding the contracts for the summer and upcoming winter, the City also awarded emergency contract last winter for manually filling nearly 15,000 potholes.
In total, City crews have filled nearly 148,000 potholes between mid-April and July for an average of 12,000 potholes per week. The boroughs also awarded contracts directly.
Last week, the City also launched a bidding process for buying two pothole repair machines which are expected to be delivered next year for use in fall 2027. The machines would reportedly allow fixing potholes in temperatures as low as minus-10 Celsius.
The craters on the city streets, notorious for poor driving conditions, caught the public imagination after a Montreal contractor Saad Tekiout went viral for taking matters into his own hands and fixing the potholes. Martinez Ferrada also made headlines after saying she got two flat tires.
