Man dies in St-Henri fire, police call it ‘accidental’

A fire that killed one person late Tuesday afternoon in St-Henri is believed to have been accidental, according to Montreal Police (SPVM).

Around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, a call came into 911 about a fire in an apartment on Saint-Antoine Street, near Saint-Ferdinand Street.

At the scene, firefighters found the man unconscious. His death was confirmed onsite.

He became the fifth person to die in a home without a smoke alarm in just three weeks in Quebec.

The building was evacuated, and no other injuries were reported.

Since the fire was fatal, the investigation was transferred to the SPVM’s arson squad.
