Spring break doesn’t feel much like spring this year, as Environment Canada issues a special weather statement for Wednesday warning Montreal of freezing rain.
Today, will bring cloudy skies with snow starting in the afternoon. Accumulations of 2 to 4 cm are expected. The high will be plus 1, with a morning wind chill of minus 10.
At night, snow changing to periods of rain near midnight. Risk of freezing rain this evening and after midnight.
As of Wednesday, between 15 and 30 millimetres of rain could fall until Thursday. After a few centimetres of snow, there will be a risk of freezing rain Wednesday morning before temperatures rise and the rain begins.
“We’ve been in the depths of winter with the last couple of storms where it’s been cold, it’s been snowy, but now we’re heading into March, we’re getting into more of these spring-like storms where we get kind of a cocktail of precipitation, a real mixed bag,” said Gina Ressler, Meteorologist, Environment and Climate Change Canada.
“So that’s the type of storm that we are seeing this week.”
“While the main bulk of the precipitation won’t arrive on Wednesday, we’ll likely be getting a little bit of snow arriving Tuesday evening and through the overnight,” explained Ressler. “Now as this warm front pushes in Tuesday night into Wednesday, that snow could change over to freezing rain for some locations in Montreal.”
“Most likely areas in Laval, the North Shore, and kind of along the northern edges of the St. Lawrence Valley, into the Ottawa River Valley.”
“Temperatures will be dropping again below zero, which could create some icy conditions,” said Ressler. “Windy conditions are expected to with this major storm, so all of those risks are things to be aware of.”
Friday, will start with a mix of sun and clouds and a high of plus 1, followed by cloudy with 60 per cent chance of flurries at night and a low of minus 5.
Saturday, will have periods of snow with a high of minus 3, followed by cloudy periods at night and a low of minus 12.
The forecast for Sunday, is also a mix of sun and cloud, with a high of minus 3.
Monday, a mix of sun and cloud with 30 per cent chance of flurries, with a high of plus 2.
