Voting was going on all day Saturday to elect the new leader of municipal party Projet Montréal. The winner will take over the reins from Valerie Plante to become the mayoral candidate in the elections on November 2. Gareth Madoc-Jones reports.

Voting is going on all day on Saturday for the Projet Montréal leadership race. Polls close at 5 p.m. and the results will be announced at 8 p.m. tonight.

Party members are casting their ballots at Entrepot Dominion in Montreal. Advanced voting began last Sunday and took place over three days.

The winner will take over the reins of the party to become the mayoral candidate for  Projet Montréal at the elections on November 2.

The five candidates are city councillor, Ericka Alneus; former president of Projet Montréal, Guedwig Bernier; borough mayor of Côte-des-Neiges–NDG, Gracia Kasoki Katahwa; borough mayor of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, Laurence Lavigne Lalonde; and Plateau-Mont-Royal borough mayor, Luc Rabouin.

Projet Montréal launched this leadership race after current Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante announced last October that she would not seek a third term at the helm of the city.

Once Projet Montréal chooses their new leader tonight, he or she will face off against Soraya Martinez Ferrada, the new leader of Ensemble Montréal, currently the official opposition at City Hall.

Martinez Ferrada is formerly the federal tourism minister and Member of Parliament for the Montreal riding of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
