Projet Montréal leadership race: five candidates to debate on Thursday

The five candidates vying for the leadership of Projet Montréal will debate for the first time on Thursday night.

Those in the running are: city councillor, Ericka Alneus; former president of Projet Montréal, Guedwig Bernier; borough mayor of Côte-des-Neiges–NDG, Gracia Kasoki Katahwa; borough mayor of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, Laurence Lavigne Lalonde; and Plateau-Mont-Royal borough mayor, Luc Rabouin.

The party announced that the debate will be an opportunity to hear the candidates express their vision for Montreal and speak out on the issues affecting the borough of Ville-Marie.

The leadership race officially began on Monday and it will spans six weeks.

The campaign will conclude on March 15, when party members will vote to elect their new leader. That person will go on to become a mayoral candidate for the Nov. 2 municipal elections.

This all comes after Mayor Valérie Plante announced in Oct. that she would not seek re-election.

Projet Montréal urges those wanting to vote for their next party leader to become a member of the party before their Feb. 13 deadline.

Meanwhile, Official Opposition at City Hall, Ensemble Montréal, announced Tuesday it is resuming its leadership race. Candidates have until Feb. 28 to enter that race and a new leader for the party will be elected on April 6.
