Aqueduct leak on Mansfield creates traffic headaches downtown

An aqueduct leak reduced parts of Mansfield Street to one lane of traffic on Thursday morning – between René-Lévesque Boulevard West and Cathcart Street.

It also halted traffic fully to Sainte-Catherine Street.

City of Montreal spokesperson Philippe Sabourin tells CityNews repair work is underway.

The Ville-Marie borough was alerted to the issue Thursday morning. Officials hope to have it fixed in the next few days before major work continues on Sainte-Catherine Street West on Monday.

Earlier Thursday, Mansfield was also reduced to one lane between De la Gauchetière West and René-Lévesque Blvd. West to help already minimize the flow of vehicles up the street. Sabourin says engineers are looking to see if a second lane can be opened.

Major work on Sainte-Catherine Street West will resume March 31; it will be closed from Mansfield to Peel Street, as well as Metcalfe Street between Dorchester Square and Place Mount Royal. That closure will be in place until the end of October.

The popular downtown strip has been under construction since 2023.

This major project has a $70-million budget and is set to be completed this year.
