Quebec provincial police to carry out road safety operation Tuesday

Quebec provincial police are expected to carry out a province-wide road safety operation Tuesday patrolled by its officers and municipal police forces.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the operation will pay particular attention to reckless behaviour and equipment associated with motorcycles, and also target compliance with the “move over” law — where drivers are encouraged to change lanes, or slow down if changing lanes isn’t possible, to create a safe space around law enforcement and other emergency vehicles.

“Accompanied by more than 30 partners, including 28 municipal police forces, the police will intervene in problematic behaviors to raise drivers’ awareness of their involvement and responsibility in improving road safety and increasing the feeling of safety across the entire road network,” the SQ said in a news release.

“Currently, the main causes of fatal collisions remain reckless driving, speeding, impaired driving due to alcohol, drugs, or fatigue, and distracted driving,” said the SQ.

Police data also shows that in more than 20 per cent of fatal crashes, one or more people in a car were not wearing a seat belt.

This operation is part of a transportation network safety strategy which aims to reduce the number of fatal accidents and collisions with serious injuries in Quebec.

A similar operation was also carried out last June.
