Quebec’s police watchdog, the BEI, is investigating a police chase that ended with the death of a woman and a vehicle submerged in a Montérégie river.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) was in pursuit shortly after midnight on Thursday, attempting to catch a vehicle that had allegedly committed a traffic violation.

The BEI indicates that the vehicle lost control approximately one minute after the start of the pursuit and crashed into the Yamaska ​​River in Saint-Hyacinthe.

One of the occupants was pulled from the river. He was seriously injured and taken to a hospital, where his condition is considered stable.

Later Thursday, SQ divers discovered the body of a woman inside the vehicle.

The BEI will investigate the circumstances of the pursuit. The Montreal police have taken over the criminal investigation.
