Quebec recorded 246 work-related deaths last year, an increase of 36 deaths compared to 2023, the CNESST reported Monday.
Every year, April 28 is the day to commemorate those who have died or been injured at work. This day of mourning is observed in more than 70 countries, according to the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST).
Of the 246 deaths recorded in 2024 in Quebec, 172 are mainly deaths linked to an occupational disease.
Regarding work accidents, 96,721 people suffered one in 2024, while 10,403 contracted a work-related disease.
Labour Minister Jean Boulet reiterates that occupational health and safety must be a priority in all workplaces and that prevention must be everyone’s responsibility.
“Beyond the numbers, which everyone must reflect on, there are loved ones, family members, friends and work colleagues who are directly affected, left behind and deeply affected,” he stated on the occasion.
