An anti-capitalist rally in Montreal turned into a clash with police on Thursday evening in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.
Several dozen people gathered near La Fontaine Park around 7:15 p.m., and shorty after the start of the march, skirmishes with Montreal police (SPVM) broke out.
“Objects were thrown at the police, the demonstrators began to physically block the path of the police officers who accompanied the march,” said SPVM spokesperson, Raphaël Bergeron.
Around 8:30 p.m., police arrested a demonstrator, several others then began to throw objects and pyrotechnics at the officers.
One of them was minorly injured, according to authorities.
The crowd later dispersed around 8:35 p.m. after the arrests.
“Irritant gas had to be used in order to push back some aggressive demonstrators,” explained Bergeron.
The offenders face various charges, including obstruction, armed assault, and threats.
