Legault & Carney discuss Trump, other issues, during phone call

By The Canadian Press

Quebec Premier François Legault said he spoke by phone Thursday with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to congratulate him on winning last Monday’s election.

The conversation focused primarily on the economy, upcoming negotiations with President Donald Trump, and immigration.

Legault stated in a statement posted on X that the two men discussed “accelerating private sector projects,” particularly in defense, aeronautics, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence.

“We also discussed negotiations with Donald Trump to eliminate tariffs, particularly in the aluminum and steel sectors,” the Quebec Premier said.

He took the opportunity to reiterate some of his demands, such as federal investments in housing and infrastructure and reducing the number of temporary immigrants in Quebec.

Carney post to his social media account Friday morning and wrote: “Good to speak with Premier Legault yesterday. Québec’s economic potential is key to Canada’s future. We’ll keep working together to build on Québec’s success in innovation, clean growth and more — for a stronger Québec, and a stronger Canada.”
