Construction of new Hochelaga community centre, renovation of pool beginning spring 2027

Residents of Montreal’s Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve are one step closer to getting a new community centre.

On Tuesday, borough and City of Montreal officials launched a project to renovate the Pierre-Lorange swimming pool and expand the existing Hochelaga library building, which will eventually become a community centre.

The major construction and renovation project will create a multi-service sports and recreation hub in the Hochelaga area, officials say. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

The City of Montreal contributed nearly $25 million to the project, with the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough adding nearly $11 million.

Renovations to the Pierre-Lorange pool are partly aimed at improving its accessibility, with plans for universal changing rooms and washrooms; and a staircase and access ramp in the pool. Technical upgrades include repair and restoration of the pool’s waterproofing; replacement of the deck’s ceramic tile; and upgrading the dehumidification system.

Meanwhile the library expansion will see the building double in size to 10,000 square feet. The existing library will be relocated to new spaces.
