A young man could be seen with his phone in hand hovering over an alligator while another approaches, trying to capture images of the reptiles after making an unauthorized entry into the Granby Zoo enclosure.
The young man was then kicked out of the zoo, violating their strict safety protocols.
“This is an irresponsible act, strictly prohibited on our site, and punishable by immediate expulsion,” said Julie Hébert, Content Specialist and Editorial Production Manager at Granby Zoo.
“Our staff quickly intervened with the young man, a sequence we obviously don’t see on video,” she added.
After analyzing the situation with their animal care team, Zoo officials want to reassure the public that the safety standards established by their professional accreditation, the AZA, are being met.
The fence designed to contain visitors is 46 inches high, and a 4-foot buffer space separates it from the habitat’s main restraint, they told CityNews.
“Are we concerned about the popularity of this video? Of course!” said Hébert. “It is deplorable to see that in order to gain visibility on social media, some people are willing to put their health and that of others at risk.”
“Is this behaviour we often observe at the zoo? Fortunately, no, but we remain vigilant,” she added.
Zoo officials stress that safety guidelines are there to protect visitors, staff, and the animals.
As a precautionary measure, they are increasing surveillance on site, and higher wooden planks will also be installed in a specific area.
The Zoo is also currently evaluating legal action against the offender(s), they said.
Adding that they wish to send a clear message that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated on its site.
“The safety and well-being of our visitors, employees, and animals remain a priority,” they said.
