A 24-year-old man is in critical condition after an early morning stabbing in downtown Montreal. The incident occurred around 5:15 a.m. near the intersection of René-Lévesque Blvd. and Champlain Street, in the Ville-Marie borough.
The victim, who sustained injuries to his lower body, was conscious at the scene and transported to hospital in critical condition.
According to police, the suspect fled the scene on a non-motorized scooter. A perimeter has been set up in the area as the investigation continues. Officers are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby cameras in hopes of identifying the attacker.
In addition to the stabbing, gunshots were reportedly heard in the vicinity around the same time.
Montreal police (SPVM) are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Shots were allegedly fired Wednesday night in the Sud-Ouest borough.
Around 7:35 p.m., shots were heard by witnesses in the area, near a Petro-Canada gas station at the corner of Notre-Dame West and Guy streets.
With the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix starting Friday, the city is already very festive; several terraces nearby were occupied.
When officers from SPVM arrived on the scene, they found at least one shell casing in the parking lot.
No suspect has been arrested in connection with this case, said SPVM officials.
A perimeter has been set up to protect the scene and allow investigators, the forensic identification technician and dog handlers to analyze and try to understand the exact circumstances of this event.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not confirmed whether the two events are related.
