Emma and Noah were the most popular names among newborns in 2024.
Retraite Québec has unveiled its traditional list of the most popular first names of the year, and there are a few newcomers at the top.
Among the girls, Emma has been very popular for many years, but was overtaken by Alice and Florence in 2023. In 2024, she regained the first place he held in 2022 and 2021.
Last year, 462 girls were given this name, followed by Olivia, Florence, Charlotte, and Alice.
For boys, Noah remained number one, as it did in 2023, 2022, and 2021. In 2024, there were 572 boys named Noah. Leo, Liam, William (the latter two tied), Thomas, and Louis rounded out the top five most popular names.
Retraite Québec has offered a new feature this year: the data has been broken down by region. This means that some first names that aren’t among the most popular are gaining ground in certain regions.
In Montreal, the name Sofia tops the list for girls (90), while in Quebec as a whole, it slips to ninth place. Romy (or Rommy) are numerous on the North Shore (seven) and in the Centre-du-Québec (22), but the name does not appear in the top 10 in Quebec.
In Quebec, the first name Édouard is popular among boys (71), but it only appears in eighth place overall. In Gaspésie, Éloi was more numerous (nine), a first name that is also not in the top 10 in the entire province.
