Two young men, aged 17 and 18, are in critical condition after sustaining electric shock on Saturday afternoon while tampering with an electrical circuit breaker in an abandoned building in the Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension borough of Montreal.
Two other individuals, aged 16 and 19, were arrested at the scene by police.
They were not injured.
Montreal police (SPVM) was called to the scene at around 5:20 p.m. after reports of an explosion in an abandoned building on Faillon Street, near Drolet Street. Police officers located the two young men, who had just been electrified.
SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils explained that the four suspects had entered the building illegally and that the motive for their presence in the building was theft.
“The two suspects who were not injured (…) were arrested for breaking and entering and released on a promise to appear in court at a later date,” she told The Canadian Press. “The other two suspects, who are currently hospitalized, have not yet been arrested.”
A perimeter was set up by the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) to secure the area and protect the scene for investigators so they could analyze it and try to understand the circumstances of the event.
