A man in his 30s was shot dead early Tuesday morning in a park in downtown Montreal. A police investigation has been launched, but the perpetrator is still at large.

The man, whose identity had still not been confirmed by Montreal police as of Tuesday morning, was killed around 12:45 a.m. in Place de la Paix, a small park located near Saint-Laurent and René-Lévesque Blvds.

“According to initial reports, a suspect fired shots at the victim and then fled before police arrived,” explained Constable Caroline Chèvrefils, spokesperson for the Montreal Police (SPVM).

When they arrived on scene, police and paramedics performed CPR on the victim, but his life could not be saved.

A security perimeter has been set up to protect the crime scene. The investigation will be led by the SPVM’s Major Crimes Section.

In the hours following the murder, investigators interviewed witnesses. They will also conduct checks to determine if surveillance cameras could have captured images that could advance the investigation.

As of early Tuesday, a suspect in this case had not been identified.
