Driver reportedly escapes sinking vehicle after it falls off ferry into waters off Laval

An investigation is underway after a car fell off a small ferry and into the water between Laval and Île-Bizard on Wednesday.

A 67-year-old man managed to escape his sinking vehicle and was later treated for nervous shock in hospital, according to multiple media reports.

The car was disembarking the ferry near Laval-sur-le-Lac when a mooring line from the ferry became loose, creating a gap that caused the vehicle to fall into the water.

At around 5:20 p.m., Laval police received several 911 calls about a report of a car falling into the Rivière des Prairies.

A ferry employee reportedly jumped into the water of the Rivière des Prairies to rescue the man.

The vehicle was pulled out of the river and is a total loss.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, which has deployed a team of investigators, says the car “fell into the water while driving off the cable ferry Paule II.”
