Montreal police confirmed Sunday afternoon that they were investigating a murder after being called to what was previously considered a suspicious death that occurred early in the morning in the Saint-Leonard borough.
It was a 911 call on Sunday, around 4 a.m., that alerted emergency services about an unconscious man on Lacordaire Blvd., near the intersection on Jarry Street.
Upon arrival at the scene, police located a man with an upper body injury, possibly caused by a sharp object.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene despite resuscitation attempts.
Montreal Police (SPVM) confirmed that it was a murder, although the circumstances were still unknown.
The victim is a 52-year-old man. This is the 23rd murder in Montreal in 2025.
Investigators from the Major Crimes Unit are now in charge of the investigation, although no arrest has yet been made in connection with the murder.
Police also reported that a break-in occurred on Sunday morning around 4:30 a.m. at a residence near the murder scene.
Shortly after, a 31-year-old suspect was arrested near the scene in connection with the crime. He was interviewed by investigators and appeared before the Court of Quebec on Sunday afternoon.
The charges will be determined by the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP).
“The break-in could possibly be linked to the murder, but it is still too early to confirm this connection,” said Caroline Chèvrefils, spokesperson for the SPVM.
